Cuba, Part 2

We had a great week away in Cuba with our good friends the Slepkovs. Our kids got along really well all week, and we made the most of this opportunity to rest and relax. We spent our daytime hours at the beach and pool, and evenings in the lobby where we played games and enjoyed drinks long into the night.

Three of the kids - Miriam, Sophia, and Sam - got to be part of one of the evening shows, which was fun and hilarious all at the same time. In this photo they are taking their final bows with the singers. The kids were part of a Lion King medley, and the singers in the photo had just finished a Mamma Mia set. Definitely an unexpected highlight. (We didn’t go to any shows except for the last 20 minutes of this one!)

The water in the ocean was beautiful for swimming, and we saw lots of neat fish. The beach volleyball was fun most days as well. We were lucky to have smooth travels to and from Cuba, and are very thankful that our first resort experience was a positive one!

As a final note, we are proud of the way Aaron handled the fact that being in Cuba with us meant that he missed his 15 minutes of fame! He recently had some celebrity status for his published study about why cooking grapes in the microwave can lead to the formation of plasmas. We’re really happy for him, and hope that there were a few interview left for him to do upon his return!

Ontario is Very Big

Today is the last day of the trip. We have been in Ontario for nearly a week, and driving across this huge province has been an education on its size. We knew it was big, but now we have an idea of how big ‘big’ is. As soon as we entered Ontario the landscape was becoming more familiar. We were back on Canadian Shield territory, with rock cuts along the highway and lovely lakes dotting the landscape. We stayed at Aaron Provincial Park the first night. It was a beautiful park. Our campsite was on a small peninsula which allowed us to enjoy the sunset and sunrise. It is definitely a place I would come back to if we make this trip again. The next night we passed through our last time zone change on our way to stay in Thunder Bay at the home of a friend. Deb, John, and Noah were great hosts. We enjoyed the opportunity to share a meal and conversation with other people! Their home is lovely and back onto some really gorgeous country. We loved hearing about life in Thunder Bay and...

Utah Part 1

Our first camping spot in Utah was at Dead Horse Point State Park. As we were driving up to the park and gaining elevation the temperature kept dropping (this would occur the next few days). It was snowing, around 0 degrees Celsius, and the picnic table at our campsite had about 15 cm of snow on it. All this is NOT to say that we weren’t super impressed and loving it. The canyonous view along our campground was out-of-this-world. Upon arrival before setting up we took a quick drive to the actual point known as Dead Horse Point. Unbelievable panoramic view.        Seeing as it was actively snowing Amy and I made the executive decision to make dinner for all and that we all have dinner in the car. We then told the girls we’d put their seats down and they could stretch out in Highlander and sleep in the car for the night. They were excited and this worked well. Amy and I waited until the forecast said the wind would die down (around 10pm) to set up our 2-person tent....

Manitoba

Manitoba June 20, 2019 Yesterday was a day for everyone to just relax and recharge one’s batteries. The kids played at the playground and beach at Echo Lake. I went for a 10km run, a first in a while and therefore tough. Today we headed out on the 3.5 hr drive to Riding Mountain National Park in our penultimate province: Manitoba. We’re staying at Wasagaming Campground that has more than 700 sites.  The visitor centre had some really well done taxidermied animals: wild cats, black bears, owls, deer. We also walked to the beach of Clear Lake, which is lovely. Troop moral is a bit low these days. Lucy and Amy are quite home sick from what I can see. Miriam is quite happy to plan things like the pool game at Grollis’s house a week after we return. I’m sad that less than two weeks of our trip remains and then only 2 months before going back to work. June 21, 2019 Last night Lucy came back running from the washroom. She was freaking out because she had discovered...
