Welcome to Florida!

We went to swim with the manatees very early in the morning on Wednesday March 9th. It was a very dark morning. Everyone was very, very tired and even the muffins and the oranges were not quite enough energy for four sleepy people. But, it was totally worth it, and after we got in the water we were not even that tired any more. Not me at least. Anyway, swimming with the manatees was awesome. The first manatee came up to me a lot because it liked me so much, (and we were only supposed to touch them, with one hand, if they do come up to us) and so I let it do what it wanted and floated by it. Really. The title was swimming with the manatees but it is really floating with the manatees. We float beside them, letting them make all the choices and watch as the beautiful creatures swim by.

After swimming with the manatees, we drove over to a surprise place. Universal Studios. I had know idea that this place even existed! It has rides and places, from the movies of Universal and that included Harry Potter. Now I don’t really know how much YOU like Harry Potter, but me and Lucy...LOVE IT! In one park, there is Diagon Alley, with everything that you could possibly dream of. There was even a fake kings cross station that had a train to another park with Hogsmeade and Hogwarts. We had butterbeer, chocolate frogs, and we even bought wands! At the tip of the wands we got, there is a little sensor. There are little spots all over the place with a camera, so that when you do a certain movement with your wand, something happens! Like, for one, you move your wand as if to make a small hill. And then water comes spilling out of a fountain. These little spots are all over the place. In Gringotts, the wizard in bank, there is a ride about escaping Gringotts in the last movie, with three d glasses that show you a movie along the way. On the train in the window and door of your compartment there are videos playing. In the window it is showing the fake scenery and whether outside. In the door, it is showing shadows of people as if they were really there. When you arrive at Hogsmeade and Hogwarts there are two more rides. One outside ride, called The Flight Of The Hipogriph is a really nice short ride, and another inside is a Hogwarts ride where, while riding, you watch a movie about playing Quidditch.
We also went on a couple other rides, one of my favourite being The Rocket.

While we were there, at the end of the day, there was an awesome Mardi Gras parade, where the people on the floats toss out bead necklaces. Lucy, Mamma’s cousin’s daughter Addison, and I each caught a big neck full of necklaces. In front of each float there were dressed up people in at least a meter tall stilts, dancing! I can’t even walk in tin can stilts. Others were walking around handing out Mardi Gras coins.

    1. Me and Lucy never even knew that such a thing existed intil we were told. I had also started realizing some rides and signs appearing along the way! When we found out, we were in awe for the rest of the day. 😀

    1. I finished reading the Deathly Hollows just in time. Me and Lucy had no idea what was coming so I’m glad I finished! And, me and Lucy both got robes for one of our birthdays and Mama secretly snuck them from out closets and brought them on the trip so that we would have them at Universal Studios. And when we bought out wands we found out that, just like in the books, they all had a different length. Mine (Hermione’s) is longer than Lucy’s (Lunas)

Ontario is Very Big

Today is the last day of the trip. We have been in Ontario for nearly a week, and driving across this huge province has been an education on its size. We knew it was big, but now we have an idea of how big ‘big’ is. As soon as we entered Ontario the landscape was becoming more familiar. We were back on Canadian Shield territory, with rock cuts along the highway and lovely lakes dotting the landscape. We stayed at Aaron Provincial Park the first night. It was a beautiful park. Our campsite was on a small peninsula which allowed us to enjoy the sunset and sunrise. It is definitely a place I would come back to if we make this trip again. The next night we passed through our last time zone change on our way to stay in Thunder Bay at the home of a friend. Deb, John, and Noah were great hosts. We enjoyed the opportunity to share a meal and conversation with other people! Their home is lovely and back onto some really gorgeous country. We loved hearing about life in Thunder Bay and...

Manitoba

Manitoba June 20, 2019 Yesterday was a day for everyone to just relax and recharge one’s batteries. The kids played at the playground and beach at Echo Lake. I went for a 10km run, a first in a while and therefore tough. Today we headed out on the 3.5 hr drive to Riding Mountain National Park in our penultimate province: Manitoba. We’re staying at Wasagaming Campground that has more than 700 sites.  The visitor centre had some really well done taxidermied animals: wild cats, black bears, owls, deer. We also walked to the beach of Clear Lake, which is lovely. Troop moral is a bit low these days. Lucy and Amy are quite home sick from what I can see. Miriam is quite happy to plan things like the pool game at Grollis’s house a week after we return. I’m sad that less than two weeks of our trip remains and then only 2 months before going back to work. June 21, 2019 Last night Lucy came back running from the washroom. She was freaking out because she had discovered...

Mt St Helens to Olympic National Park

May 23, 2019    The next morning we packed up our wet tent and drove to Seaquest State Park in Castle Rock, Washington. The park is nowhere near the sea.    The first day we had an early fire with wet wood that Amy lovingly cajoled into burning. The next morning we headed to the Silver Lake Visitor Center for Mt St Helens just across the highway (we drove, but there is a tunnel you can walk through from our campground) which is run by Washington State Parks. There was a brief video and some pretty cool interactive exhibits. The video taught me that Mt St Helens started to rumble with frequent earthquakes on Mar 20, 1980 and it wasn’t until May 18th that it erupted. I’d later learn that 53 of the 57 people that died were outside of the evacuation zone the government had set up. So clearly no one was anticipating the eruption to be as immense as it was. The blast zone levelled everything with 500 MPH (800 km/h) force.    We then drove (about 1h) to...
