Amy’s Trip Haiku

On one of the wet days in Oregon last week I was thinking about ways we could celebrate the end of our time in the USA. There is a big end-of USA family post on the way, but I wanted to have some fun with this on my own. The idea of writing a little something about each state came to mind, and I settled on writing a Haiku for each state. Take each with a grain of salt...it certainly wasn’t possible to capture everything about each place but I did my best to choose things that I loved (or didn’t love) or that made me smile.

KY
Just a single night,
then we hiked in limestone caves.
No bourbon this time.

TN
After the Opry
we gathered eggs for breakfast.
Two kinds of ‘country.’

GA
Cold cloudy canyons
and mossy forest coastline
both invite us back.

FL
Land so flat and low.
Impressive beasts surround us
and so do trailers.

LA
Outside our hotel,
wedding party in the street
dancing to The Saints.

TX
Pumpjacks everywhere
but we loved your palms and dunes
and riverside walks.

NM
Recycled houses
and radio telescopes
both looking hopeful.

CO
Next time we’ll bring skis
and spend more time exploring
narrow icy trails.

UT
The shocking beauty
of your rugged rainbow rocks
helped excuse the snow.

AZ
The canyon amazed,
then Saguaros entertained
and burros were friends.

NV
Probably unfair
to judge you based on Vegas,
so maybe next time.

CA
It’s all breathtaking:
coast, Yosemite, Redwoods,
prices, traffic, smog.

OR
If rain’s what it takes
for a place to be so green
we can forgive you.

WA
The old rainforest
whispered on the breeze ‘Please, stay!’
but home was calling.

Saying Goodbye to Winter

Wishing for warmer temperature (and more sunshine) is common this time of year. I really enjoy winter, but usually by March I have joined the 'complainers,' wishing away the cold dark days in favour of something else. I have only escaped winter three times in my life. When I was in elementary school my family drove south to Myrtle Beach for March Break. When I was a teenager my family spent a week in Disney World in November. Most recently, when our kids were younger (2012) we spent March Break at a house in the Bahamas with our good friends. This year marks the fourth time I have abandoned winter, but this time we are leaving it for good, not just for a week. On Thursday we are going to Cuba with some very dear friends of ours. It will be our first trip to a resort ever (maybe our only one ever!) and it marks the beginning of our adventures away from home this year. When we return from Cuba we will only have one day to pack and get organized before we leave on the big road ...

Manitoba

Manitoba June 20, 2019 Yesterday was a day for everyone to just relax and recharge one’s batteries. The kids played at the playground and beach at Echo Lake. I went for a 10km run, a first in a while and therefore tough. Today we headed out on the 3.5 hr drive to Riding Mountain National Park in our penultimate province: Manitoba. We’re staying at Wasagaming Campground that has more than 700 sites.  The visitor centre had some really well done taxidermied animals: wild cats, black bears, owls, deer. We also walked to the beach of Clear Lake, which is lovely. Troop moral is a bit low these days. Lucy and Amy are quite home sick from what I can see. Miriam is quite happy to plan things like the pool game at Grollis’s house a week after we return. I’m sad that less than two weeks of our trip remains and then only 2 months before going back to work. June 21, 2019 Last night Lucy came back running from the washroom. She was freaking out because she had discovered...

Utah Part 1

Our first camping spot in Utah was at Dead Horse Point State Park. As we were driving up to the park and gaining elevation the temperature kept dropping (this would occur the next few days). It was snowing, around 0 degrees Celsius, and the picnic table at our campsite had about 15 cm of snow on it. All this is NOT to say that we weren’t super impressed and loving it. The canyonous view along our campground was out-of-this-world. Upon arrival before setting up we took a quick drive to the actual point known as Dead Horse Point. Unbelievable panoramic view.        Seeing as it was actively snowing Amy and I made the executive decision to make dinner for all and that we all have dinner in the car. We then told the girls we’d put their seats down and they could stretch out in Highlander and sleep in the car for the night. They were excited and this worked well. Amy and I waited until the forecast said the wind would die down (around 10pm) to set up our 2-person tent....
