Packing time

In less than a week, we'll be in Cuba, so there's so much to do! Another family is going to live in our house while we're gone, which means we had to box up a lot of our stuff and put it away. For me, that means empty shelves, almost empty bookshelves, clean desk, clean floor, empty drawers... almost everything needs to be moved. A suitcase is sitting on my floor at this moment, ready to be filled with clothing (just need the laundry to be ready) for a winter trip to our cottage (COLDCOLDCOLD) with some friends. I've recently begun to pack some bags for the big trip, including a toiletries bag and an activities-for-the-car bag. I'm allowed to bring three books on the trip. Which ones do I choose? (Maybe Anne of Green Gables, The Mysterious Benedict Society and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?) We will also have a family iPad (to respond to emails and write blog posts) and a Kobo (more reading if the books are available) for the road. I hope it will be enough for being gone for several months!

  3. Excellent book choices Lucy! Do you access your library with your kobo? If you're anywhere with wifi, stock up! Lol.

Saying Goodbye to Winter

Wishing for warmer temperature (and more sunshine) is common this time of year. I really enjoy winter, but usually by March I have joined the 'complainers,' wishing away the cold dark days in favour of something else. I have only escaped winter three times in my life. When I was in elementary school my family drove south to Myrtle Beach for March Break. When I was a teenager my family spent a week in Disney World in November. Most recently, when our kids were younger (2012) we spent March Break at a house in the Bahamas with our good friends. This year marks the fourth time I have abandoned winter, but this time we are leaving it for good, not just for a week. On Thursday we are going to Cuba with some very dear friends of ours. It will be our first trip to a resort ever (maybe our only one ever!) and it marks the beginning of our adventures away from home this year. When we return from Cuba we will only have one day to pack and get organized before we leave on the big road ...

Almost time!

I can't wait in till the trip comes. It is creeping closer and closer and we are planing more and more as the days go on. We recently got a message saying that we are going to go on the fairy's that we wanted to. I don't know how I will feel so far away from home and for such a long time, but I know that it will be worth it to see all those things and experience moments that others might not. Their is so much ahead of me and it's all going through my head at once but once the trip starts it will hopefully lay out. All the places that we are going to and things that we will see are planed out now so we at least know where we are planing to go. For now we need to savor our moments with friends and keep packing and thinking of important items. This road trip is going to be the highlight for this year so it's best that we just sit back, and enjoy the ride.                             ...

Planning a 'Great Adventure'

Over the last year, the time invested in trip planning has been slowly ramping up. Last spring I engaged in many short bursts of trip research, falling down Google rabbit holes as I looked into campsite availability or investigated the timing of the trip relative to the local climate. (This is why we are no longer planning to go to Wyoming...a bit too chilly to camp at that time of year!) This week, the last piece of the puzzle for the USA portion clicked into place when we learned that we were successful in obtaining a backcountry camping permit for the Grand Canyon. This information allowed us to map out the last few nights in Arizona, and now we know where our home will be for each of our 93 days in the United States. Currently I am waiting for a reply from BC ferries about some reservation requests I made. Once we find out about those, we will be able to map out our return trip across Canada. There are times while I plan that I wonder about how we'll feel about being so far a...
