The Northern Adventure

The Northern Adventure
Blogger: Miriam
Our first time going on a sleeping ferry! But first we had to wait in long lines of cars and find our parking spot. But finally we grabbed our things and got out of the car. When we got inside we grabbed our cabin keys and went to our room, 702. Lucy and I were to sleep in the bed and Mama and Daddy on the floor on deck five but then we saw the space inside our cabin. There was room for like ten people to sleep on the floor even though it wouldn’t be comfortable. Lucy and I would have slept on the floor but Mama and Daddy were the ones with the mats and sleeping bags so they were to sleep at the foot of the bed. We had a bathroom and a shower inside and two big circular windows looking at the side and bow of the boat. We had a fridge, a TV, small desk, a desk chair, double bed, two comfortable chairs, a phone, two pictures, one mirror, a closet, a circular table, two bedside tables (that had lips on the edges so that nothing fell off), three mints, and the most wonderful view of the sea. There were no rooms for four and the rooms that connected two rooms were all out but this was much better! Only four rooms at the front of the boat looked like this and (because of our awesome mother) we were lucky to have one of them. Meanwhile, Lala, Purple Bear, Orange Puff, Lillian, and Marshmallow (Me and Lucy’s stuffies) took a vow to not look away from the window until the boat started to move.

The first important announcement to come on was about how they could not fit all of the cars on the boat and that they had to change some peoples’ tickets to foot tickets and that’s why it was taking so long for the boat to leave the dock at Port Hardy. We walked around the outdoor deck for awhile but the boat did not start so we went back to the car to get some last minute things. When we got back to our cabin the boat still had not started. We kept thinking that we were feeling and hearing noises and movements that meant the boat was going to start but it took quite a while for the safety announcement to come on. When it did we were ready to finally start our trip. Out we went away from the dock and only a couple minutes later there was an another announcement that a whale had been spotted up ahead to the left. We did not end up seeing the whale but it was fun to know one was there. Lucy and I could finally convince our stuffies to look away from the window but it took quite a while for us to look away ourselves. Eventually though there was an announcement that a movie was playing downstairs on deck five so me and Lucy went to watch it because we had not watched a movie in a long time and sometimes it’s nice to sit and watch something. During the movie, I would look up to see that it was getting darker and darker and we were rocking back and forth quite a bit and I could feel it too! When the movie was over and Lucy and I went back up to our cabin and Mama and Daddy said that it was finally time to get in bed. We had to close the curtains for “Navigational Purposes” because it was getting dark outside so we did just that. After reading and thinking for a bit we all fell asleep.

In the morning we got up and had some granola and yogurt for breakfast and now here I am sitting at the small desk writing this blog post.

  1. What a view Miriam!!!
You are right- your mom is the most amazing taste in booking special places for you to stay. I wonder how you will ever be able to choose a favourite after this adventure 😃.
    Miss you - ttys.

Saying Goodbye to Winter

Wishing for warmer temperature (and more sunshine) is common this time of year. I really enjoy winter, but usually by March I have joined the 'complainers,' wishing away the cold dark days in favour of something else. I have only escaped winter three times in my life. When I was in elementary school my family drove south to Myrtle Beach for March Break. When I was a teenager my family spent a week in Disney World in November. Most recently, when our kids were younger (2012) we spent March Break at a house in the Bahamas with our good friends. This year marks the fourth time I have abandoned winter, but this time we are leaving it for good, not just for a week. On Thursday we are going to Cuba with some very dear friends of ours. It will be our first trip to a resort ever (maybe our only one ever!) and it marks the beginning of our adventures away from home this year. When we return from Cuba we will only have one day to pack and get organized before we leave on the big road ...

Almost time!

I can't wait in till the trip comes. It is creeping closer and closer and we are planing more and more as the days go on. We recently got a message saying that we are going to go on the fairy's that we wanted to. I don't know how I will feel so far away from home and for such a long time, but I know that it will be worth it to see all those things and experience moments that others might not. Their is so much ahead of me and it's all going through my head at once but once the trip starts it will hopefully lay out. All the places that we are going to and things that we will see are planed out now so we at least know where we are planing to go. For now we need to savor our moments with friends and keep packing and thinking of important items. This road trip is going to be the highlight for this year so it's best that we just sit back, and enjoy the ride.                             ...

Planning a 'Great Adventure'

Over the last year, the time invested in trip planning has been slowly ramping up. Last spring I engaged in many short bursts of trip research, falling down Google rabbit holes as I looked into campsite availability or investigated the timing of the trip relative to the local climate. (This is why we are no longer planning to go to Wyoming...a bit too chilly to camp at that time of year!) This week, the last piece of the puzzle for the USA portion clicked into place when we learned that we were successful in obtaining a backcountry camping permit for the Grand Canyon. This information allowed us to map out the last few nights in Arizona, and now we know where our home will be for each of our 93 days in the United States. Currently I am waiting for a reply from BC ferries about some reservation requests I made. Once we find out about those, we will be able to map out our return trip across Canada. There are times while I plan that I wonder about how we'll feel about being so far a...
